WTN: A Red & A Sticky @ Roman's...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Mon Dec 14, 2020 7:42 pm

Tried these two (among others) at Roman/May's Thurs night:
1. Forlorn-Hope Trousseau Noir odb RorickHeritageVnyd/CalaverasCnty/SierraFoothills (11.76%) MatthewRorick/Murphys 2018: Very light near rose color; light pencilly/oak rather floral/rose petal/cranberry/lilacs rather earthy/loamy/dusty bit AlpineRed rather rustic interesting nose; quite tart/tangy bit lean/pinched rather earthy/loamy/rustic some floral/rose petal/lilacs bit musky/pungent light pencilly/oak flavor w/ light brisk tannins; med.long quite tart/lean/pinched some floral/rose petal/bit metallic fairly earthy/loamy finish w/ light tannins; a rather earthy/loamy/rustic/lightweight expression of Trousseau; resembles some a lightweight Jura Trousseau; an interesting rustic red/rose. $34.00

2. Qupe Marsanne Doux Sawyer-LindquistVnyd/EdnaVlly (10.0%; Demeter; SaH: 24.0 Brix; "straw dried"; Hrvstd: 10/7/13; ---> 43.1 Brix when pressed on 12/6/13; RS: 19.6%) Robert N.Lindquist, SantaMaria 2013: Deep gold/burnished bronze color; very strong grapey/passito bit cedary/pencilly slight earthy beautiful fragrant rather complex nose; quite sweet slight cedary/pencilly very grapey/passito/orangey/honeyed/honeycomb quite complex beautiful flavor; very long/lingering very sweet intense passito/grapey/honeyed/honeycomb/orangey beautiful rather complex flavor; starting to show some nuance; a beautiful passito like they should be making much more of in Calif; resembles a bit the Vignalta Fior d'Arancio but w/o the Muscat character; very much resembles a Friuli Picolit or LateHrvst Verduzzo; a beautiful dessert wine that will go another 10-15 yrs. $32.00/hlf

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. Roman hails from the Ukraine. He makes a genuine Ukrainian Borscht that is out of this world. He is also a bread baker, par excellence. So his Borscht is just an excuse to sop up w/ bread. I ate a whole loaf myself at table.
We generally like a PinotNoir with his Borscht. The two we had (Drew & Ojai) didn't particularly work well. But the Trousseau, w/ its earthy character, was a somewhat better match.

2. Trousseau: These Trousseaus originally came to Calif in the late 1800's and planted at the Jackson Station in the Sierra Foothills, closed around 1920. In 1989; UC/Davis went into the vnyd (totally untended for yrs) and brought back to Davis what varieties they could identify, Trousseau being one (Refosco another, that was later identified by DNA to be Mondeuse). Trousseau is known in Portugal as Bastardo. So Matt's planting of Trousseau marks its return to the SierraFoothills. The wine is made with 100% stem inclusion.
I have no idea what the "O.D.B." stands for. Probably "Old Dead Bastard".
