WTN: RioMadre Graciano Rioja '11...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Thu Dec 10, 2020 2:58 pm

Tried this Rioja Graciano w/ Sue a few weeks ago:
1. RioMadre Dd'OC: Rioja Graciano (14.50%; JorgeOrdonezSlctns) Bodegas y Vinedos Ilurce/Alfaro/Espana 2011: Very dark color; very fragrant/perfumed Graciano/floral/strawberry/blackberry/bit peppery light pencilly/vanilla/oak bit dusty/OV/earthy lovely aromatic nose; bit soft very floral/Graciano/strawberry/peppery/quite spicy some dusty/OV/earthy light pencilly/oak some complex flavor w/ light bitey tannins; very long bit soft peppery/floral/Graciano/strawberry/blackberry/very spicy bit pencilly/Am.oak/vanilla bit complex finish w/ light tannins; a lovely Rioja red better than most Tempranillos from there.

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. Graciano is, of course, a variety that appears to be indigenous to Rioja. Don't know any DNA work on Graciano. Apparently used mostly in Rioja for blending w/ their Tempranillo.
I've only tried a few Gracianos, but the ones I have I've liked quite a bit. I've particularly liked the Graciano produced by Louisa Sawyer-Lindquist/Verdad.

Tom, I think Louisa's Graciano must be really interesting, given where it grows, both in terms of soil and climate. Thanks for reminding me--I need to try it!
I don't know just how I'm supposed to play this scene, but I ain't afraid to learn...

I have a 2017 in the cellar and not keen to open too young! Thanks for this.
