WTN: A White & Red w/ DinDin...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Wed Dec 09, 2020 3:43 pm

Had these two last night w/ DinDin:
1. Manni Nossing GrunerVeltliner DOC: Sudtirol Eisacktaler/Valle Isarco (13.5%) Manni Nossing/Bressanone/Brixen
2018
: Light yellow color; strong GV/white pepper/floral/carnations rather mineral/chalky/perfumed talc rather spicy quite lovely nose; quite tart/tangy/wirey strong GV/white pepper/floral/carnations fairly mineral/chalky/steely bit metallic/tangy some complex lovely GV flavor; very long rather steely/mineral/chalky somewhat GV/white pepper lithe/wirey/brisk/tart finish; speaks quietly of GV/floral w/ much more minerality than usually found in Austrian GV; a lovely expression of GV from the Sudtirol. $32.00 (K-L)

2. Ser Cabernet Pfeffer CentralCoast (13.3%; 220 cs) NicoleWalsh/SantaCruz 2016: Med.color; somewhat herbal/Cab-like/bit bell peper very spicy/peppery/CabPfeffer/bit floral/lilacs some dusty/OV/earthy/loamy light pencilly/oak very interesting/exotic nose; fairly tart strong herbal/peppery/CabPfeffer/very spicy/bit floral/bit vegetal some earthy/loamy/dusty/OV bit pencilly/oak very interesting flavor w/ light tangy tannins; very long rather peppery/CabPfeffer/herbal/bit floral somewhat earthy/loamy/dusty/OV light pencilly/oak finish w/ light tannins; quite an interesting/exotic red much like other CabPfeffers I've tried; reminds a lot of the old CharlesLeFranc (Almaden) CPf but less oak; some of the KenVolk CPf but not as rustic; some of Basque Manseng; speaks strongly of PatEnz's vnyd near Hollister.
$36.00

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. Ser is the SantaCruz wnry of NicoleWalsh. She started in winemaking in Michigan, then becoming winemaker at BonnyDoon, plus managing the development of Randal's vnyd in SanJuanBautista. She makes wines that she wants to express the vnyd origins. I gather she is a "natural" winemaker, but doesn't make a big deal of it & her wines, which I like a lot, don't display any natty character that I can pick up.
CabernetPfeffer (pepper) has a tiny 10 acres of vines in SanBenitoCnty at the deRoseVnyd and PatWirz's CienegaVlly vnyd. Very old vine stuff. Once thought to be a CabernetSauv X Trousseau cross, Nicole did the DNA at Davis & it was found to be the obscure French variety Mourtaou and no relation to Cabernet. There's no idea how it made its way to Calif. Its origins are apparently in Bordeaux.
