WTN: Two Older JosephPhelps Stickies....(short/boring)

by TomHill » Sun Dec 06, 2020 5:48 pm

Tried these two w/ Susan this weekend:
1. JosephPhelps Eisrebe NapaVlly/Calif (Scheurebe=SylvanerXRiesling; 7.7%; SaH: 23.3 Brix; RS: 23%) 1995: Rather brown/light PX color; very strong grapey/raisened/bit PX-like bit volatile some earthy bit complex nose; soft intense grapey/raisened/pruney very sweet some complex flavor; very long/lingering quite sweet intense grapey/raisened/pruney/old passito bit simple some light/PX-like/grapey/raisened finish; much like a lighter PX; very sweet & very grapey but not a whole lot of complexity for a wine of this age; sort of a Johnny-one-note.
$40.00/hlf

2. JosephPhelps JohannisbergRiesling LateHrvst (9.0%; SaH: 28 Brix; RS: 13.0%) 1994: Med.dark brown/light PX bit murkey color; intense raisened/pruney/grapey slight botrytis/apricotty strong old passito rather complex nose; very tart/tangy intense grapey/raisened/pruney perhaps slight botrytis/apricotty intenselt sweet bit complex flavor w/ little Riesling character; very long/lingering late hrvsty/raisened/pruney/old passito/grapey quite tart very sweeet finish w/ slight bitterness; lots of late hrvst/raisened/pruney character w/ slight hints of botrytis; an interesting passito that could be of any grape variety.

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. Not sure exactly how these were made. From the wine specs, I suspect the Scheurebe was made as a freezer ice wine. The JR appears to simply be a late harvest R left on the vine to sur-maturity, with botrytis playing a minor, if any, role.
Bot were like many of the late hrvst & freezer ice wines....not really evolving into anything of great complexity. These are not nearly in the same league as the Phelps BA & TBA stickies.
Had these two w/ the pistachio/candied ginger bark from Pig+Fig. A beautiful pairing they were.
