WTN: Failla Syrah Estate '05....(short/boring)

by TomHill » Sun Dec 06, 2020 5:29 pm

Had this last night w/ Susan's Turkey Enchiladas:
1. Failla Syrah EstateVnyd/SonomaCoast (14.1%) 2005: Very dark color w/ slight bricking; strong pungent/blackberry/Syrah/very spicy strong w-c/Rhonish/roasted/pungent rather c-c/black pepper very complex NRhonish beautiful nose; quite tart/tangy rather angular/spikey very strong blackberry/Syrah quite pungent/w-c/Rhonish rather c-c/black pepper complex flavor w/ ample hard/chewey tannins; very long/lingering quite tart/tangy/tannic very strong w-c/NRhonish/pungent fairly c-c/black pepper rather blackberry/spicy Syrah rather complex finish w/ ample hard/gritty/ripe tannins; still loaded w/ hard/chewey rugged tannins and progressing at a glacial pace.

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. This Failla is everything you want in a c-c/w-c/Rhonish Calif Syrah. A beautiful nose. But on the palate, it is dominated by hard/rugged tannins. I'm a bit doubtful that this wine will ever outlast the tannins & turn into a really pleasurable/drinkable syrah. But certainly the intensity is there to do so.

Are those rugged tannins still an issue with more recent vintages? I have a few bottles, but have been slow to go after them, preferring my Syrah with some age.
