WTN: Bedrock Wirz Riesling & OldVineZin '19...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Sun Nov 22, 2020 7:54 pm

Launching into my newly-arrived Bedrock stash, I tried early this week:
1. Bedrock Riesling WirzVnyd/CienegaVlly (13.5%; Plntd: 1963; Dry farmed/Own rooted; Tended: Pat Wirz) 2019: Lots of mesmerizing tiny bubbles swirling about when poured almost makes it look cloudy, but disappate after a minute or two; light gold color; quite attractive floral/R/mango rather mineral/chalky/steely quite interesting nose; rather tart/tangy fairly chalky/flinty/steely slight CO2/prickle some R/floral/mango totally dry slightly rich/lush quite interesting flavor; very long slight CO2/prickle rather mineral/chalky some floral/R/mango finish; quite a lovely Calif R w/ good balance of R fruit & mineral/chalky character; should go out 8-10 yrs or longer; very well-priced at $20.00

2. Bedrock Zin OldVine Calif (14.4%; > 80 yrs of age vnyds; Drk: 10/20-10/25-10/30: MTP) 2019: Dark color; very strong bright raspberry/blackberry/very spicy Zin fairly dusty/OV some toasty/smokey/oak bit complex bracing beautiful nose; fairly tart/tangy strong bright/very spicy Zin/blackberry/raspberry rather dusty/OV light toasty/oak slight earthy rather structured flavor w/ light brisk/tangy tannins; very long bit tart/tangy some dusty/OV strong bright/brisk/blackberry/raspberry/Zin/very spicy/slight peppery lovely finish w/ light brisk tannins; not a profound Zin but lots of OV character & loads of bright very spicy Zin fruit; stupid/silly price at $19.00

1. I was mightly impressed by this yr's edition of the OV Zin. Lots of bright brisk Zin fruit but still the structure to improve over several yrs. It's dishonest to buy a Zin this good at this price.

The OVZ has been crazy good the last three vintages. It’s been a big step above its prior high quality.

Every once in a while I wonder why I should even buy the SV wines, but then I come to my senses.
