Actually, Bob, I find little romantic in it - it's simply synergetic. I'd say that a dusty Merlot and many a Pinotage are natural matches with bitter black cocoa. Years ago I would only have cited Merlot, but I've had quite a few Pinotages from SA that have displayed strong overtones of cocoa that, thankfully, call to mind bitter chocolate, not the sweet mass-market stuff.
