Weninger Ponzichter 2018 - a blend of Pinot Noir and Zweigelt from Horitschon in Mittelburgenland, Austria and Balf from Sopron in Hungary; 12%abv; c.22€
On the face of it, it might seem a strange idea to make a wine from two countries but in fact it's all from basically the same vineyards in the same geographical area owned by Weninger - just with an arbitrary political boundary between so it can only be designated as from the EU. It's tasty stuff. The scent is gently spicy (not of the new oak type) with some obvious and attractive pinosity despite the Zweigelt in the blend. Very lively and invigorating palate with crunchy, bright fruit and good acidity so it is irresistibly moreish. Lovely wine. Buy again? Oh yes!
