WTN: Idlewild Cortese FoxHillVnyd '18...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Fri Oct 23, 2020 12:34 pm

Cracked into my latest Idlewild shipment last night:
1. Idlewild Cortese FoxHillVnyd/MendoCnty (13.1%; www.IdlewildWines.com) 2018: Med.light yellow color; fairly strong Cortese/stony/chalky/dusty light floral/carnations pure Cortese fruit nose; rather tart/tangy fairly strong stony/chalky/dusty light floral/Cortese/carnations quite attractive flavor; very long rather mineral/stony/chalky/dusty some floral/Cortese/carnations finish; a lovely expression of Cortese that would be right at home w/ its Piemontese sisters but w/ more floral fruit; no signs of skin-contact/ViniMacerati whatsoever. $40.00

1. In the last some vintages, Sam as made his Cortese w/ some skin-contact Cortese therein, made from the riper Cortese on the South-facing side of the row. It has a way of aging into a very exotic expression of Cortese, unlike anything from the Piemonte. In this '18 version, I could not pick up any signs of skin-contact. Made for a much more conventional expression of his Cortese.

According to Sam, the wine is 20%-25% skin-contact, macerated for 2 months. I would think I would pick up some skin-contact/phenolic/ViniMacerati character. I was looking for it, but was not able to get any whatsover. He's trying to make it to have more fruit and less VM character. It will be interesting to see how the version of his Cortese evolves.
David Bueker has a better palate Than mine, so maybe he'll pick up some.
