WTN: 2014 Foillard Morgon 3.14

by Rahsaan » Sun Oct 18, 2020 5:30 pm

Finally opened the lone bottle of 2014 Foillard 3.14 that I've had in the wine cabinet for a few years. I don't think I've had this cuvee in over 10 years, but I do have positive memories about drinking it in France.

This bottle also ended up a positive experience, after starting off a bit too dark for my preferences. It retained the ripe dark fruit throughout, but with air came the layers and the elegant structure, the typical Foillard crystal silk. Although with a bit more focus and poise than the standard CdP. It was also a gorgeous match for the pizza with tomato sauce, sottocenere, maitake, nettles and basil.

That said, at $80-100, it didn't feel worth it and I would probably rather spend that money on other stuff in the future.

Wow! It has gotten that expensive? The 2009 (which I still have two) was $35.

You might be able to find it for less but winesearcher says avg price for recent vintages is $100. I paid less than that for this 2014, but it was years ago and I don't remember the price. Regardless, for me this was a nice elegant wine for $50-60. Mileage obviously varies for others!

I hadn't remembered historical prices, but if the 2009 was $35 that seems like a steep rise, but it makes sense. Because I was drinking it 10+ years ago in France as a grad student, and I think it was pretty rare for me to spend anywhere near $100 per bottle at the time!

The Corcelette still sells here for the equivalent of 40 USD.

Same here. The Corcelette and the Cote du Py are 40-50 USD, depending where you buy them. Although they have gotten more popular over the years and sometimes sell out quickly.

I've always loved the 3.14 in every vintage I've tried (I know some think too big/ripe), but like the Cuvee Marcle Lapierre it has passed beyond my Beaujolais budget. Thanks for note.

I think Cuvee Marcel is still $50. That's what I paid recently for the 2015. Not sure if that's what you deem acceptable for Beaujolais, but it's pretty much the same as the standard Foillard CdP!
