WTN: Farewell old friend

2001 Hexamer Meddersheimer Rheingrafenberg Riesling Kabinett - Germany, Nahe (10/17/2020)
Totally mature at age 19, which is more than you can say for humans! The golden color is tinged with a hint of orange, and the aromatics reflect that, as there is an orange peel essence that I often associate with fully mature Riesling. It's not tired or drying out though. It's just mature, and still putting out a lighting fast jab. The acidity is more apparent, as there is no more youthful sweetness. It's barely halbtrocken now, and showing mineral and spice notes in the mid-palate. I bought a half dozen when this was released in 2002. This was the final bottle. It's hard to say goodbye to a 2001 Riesling. The vintage was (and is) special. There's still some spätlese and auslese in the cellar, and so there will be more moments. They'll just be different.
