WTN: The Name of the Rose

by David M. Bueker » Sun Oct 11, 2020 8:43 pm

  • 1976 Hessische Staatsweingüter Kloster Eberbach Hochheimer Domdechaney Riesling Auslese - Germany, Rheingau (10/11/2020)
44 years on from the vintage, it’s an ethereal dream of a Riesling. Each aroma, each flavor is through a thin layer of gauze. Orange blossom, tea, spice and fresh mint mingle in a dance of ghosts, present for all who are attentive. The sweetness of an old Auslese emerges with time, recalling the richness of youth. Elegance, and stately presence are the defining characteristics of the wine, an old general who still commands respect.

Yup, David... those Spatlese/Auslese from '76 are, in most cases, still very much alive. I assume the color was pretty dark??
My (deceased) friend, Blair's, cellar still has over a dozen '76's left we've been working thru. A thin layer of gauze is a great descriptor.

Not terribly dark. Burnished gold would be a good descriptor.

Sounds great. I'm also vintage 1976, but thankfully these descriptors don't yet apply to me!
