2013 Gunderloch Nackenheim Rothenberg Riesling Großes Gewächs - Germany, Rheinhessen (10/1/2020)
Seven years post vintage, and it’s still a bit reductive after I pop the screw cap. That disappeared after 30 minutes or so, and revealed a broad shouldered, but still vibrant wine that showed darker tones than I would have expected. It’s a brooding Riesling, Strider in the fire light at The Inn of the Prancing Pony. It’s intellectual but regal, a true warrior statesman. I will hold my last bottle for quite while longer, so that perhaps the sage, benevolent liege will emerge.

Love this note. As you know, I'm not the riesling fan you are, but back in the 90's I fell in love with Gunderloch Rothenberg. Owned many vintages when we lived in Alaska, and had a deal with a Seattle restaurant called Wild Ginger such that when we'd fly down for medical appointments, we'd go straight there and order a Gunderloch with a particular Burmese Dungeness crab curry they did. Together, that was one of the great wine-food pairings of my life. Probably haven't had one in 20 years--should change that, right?

Definitely get some. The GG is a wonderful example of the genre, if not quite in a crowd pleasing mold.

Laura and I actually dined at Wild Ginger years ago.

That's cool. I loved what it was then, both at the original location and the early years after the move; but now? Wasn't impressed with it either of the two times I've been there since moving to this area. Seemed somewhat formulaic. Anyway, yes, must go find some Gunderlochs.
