Wineries burning in Napa/Sonoma

by Jenise » Mon Sep 28, 2020 6:02 pm

Heard Failla got it. Very sad. Many others are threatened, of course. Calistoga's being evacuated.

Also saw footage of Chateau Boswell over on the Napa side burning, too. Has anyone ever had a Boswell? I know the building, remember when they built it, but know no one who's ever owned the wines. Have the feeling they're tourist bait more than anything, but I could be wrong. It had new owners.

Looks like that big resort in Napa burned down too. Meadow Wood? Meadowlark? Something like that.

This shit just won't stop.

This article has good info. It was a vineyard that burned, the winery is still standing, for the moment.

Unfortunately, while the namesake castle of Castello di Amorosa survived, apparently they lost all their bottled inventory.

Definitely Chateau Boswell too. I haven’t heard of it either, but it’s been around for over 40 years.

Famed California winery destroyed as fast-moving fires take over wine country
The famed 41-year-old Chateau Boswell Winery in Napa Valley, California, was destroyed during the Glass Fire on Sunday evening, according to CNN affiliate KPIX.

Ehren Jordan put a post on Instagram refuting that Failla had burned.

Others are not so lucky.

Probably should re-title this thread.

Facebook post by Jeff Leve.

Heartbreaking, devastating and tragic does not begin to depict my feelings.

A few of the wineries that have enjoyed damaged or destroyed; Amarosa, Blueline, Burgess, Chateau Boswell, Burgess, Calistoga Ranch, Castillo di Amarossa, Calistoga Ranch, Failla, Fairwinds, Hourglass, Newton, Rombauer, Schramsburg, Titus and Meadowood are all damaged or gone.

Numerous other vineyards, homes, wineries, businesses and most importantly lives are at risk.

This is a horrible tragedy that breaks hearts all over the world. Watching it unfold is horrifying beyond belief. #napastrong

Jeff’s report does not match what some of the actual wineries are reporting.

And he actually used the word "enjoyed"? [shaking head]

I think he left out "I" so it's not quite as awful as it seems, but still in need of a clue. I wonder where he got the information on those wineries, though. Rumor mill? Fog of war?

I know there was at least one legitimate paper that listed a bunch of places as “burned” that had not. Ehren Jordan called them out for that.

Here is one article FYI.

https://www.sfchronicle.com/wine/articl ... NPNKm2IKIc

Based on some reports, two resorts have been impacted: Meadowood & Calistoga Ranch? I am not familiar with that area. I will say that I've tasted Sterling & Hourglass wines.

It does make me pause & count my blessings.

Thoughts are with those at risk....

Many of the reports are quite inaccurate. Check the winery Facebook and Instagram pages for the real news.

CTers who are on the respective mailing lists are reporting that Shafer & Montelena (reds) will not be issuing 2020 vintages. I am not on those lists, but some folks here may be.

Neither a Facebook nor an Instagram user. I may be a Luddite; that's OK.

Lamborn has also bowed out of 2020. Jamie Kutch reports that he will likely only issue a single Pinot Noir, where he normally has 5 or so.

I subscribe to Montelena's Cellermasters program. I got an email directly from the winery announcing that, due to smoke damage, there will be no cabernet or zinfandel in the 2020 vintage. The white variety harvest had started earlier and was mostly completed before the smoke became a problem, so there will be white 2020s.

This is one of those mixed blessing years for those of us who are addicted to our wine clubs/allocations.
