Remembering 9/11...

by TomHill » Fri Sep 11, 2020 1:27 pm

I was into work early and was checking out the wine boards, either alt.food.wine or WestCoastWineNetwork. Don't remember which one. A member who was a financial type with an office high up on WallStreet . Don't remember his name anymore. He posted "Holy $hit... a plane just crashed into the WorldTradeCenter". Went down the hall to our conference room, flipped on the TV, and spent the rest of the day watching it all unfold in real time, within minutes of the first impact.
So don't claim the WineBoards are a big waste of time.

Remembered this am that it is the 19th anniversary. Thinking of all those impacted. So many.

We were on vacation at the time. I had been the first to get up, so I went down to the breakfast bar. In the lobby they had a large TV. That's when I learned about the first plane hitting a tower. Somehow I grabbed some stuff and got upstairs to wake up Dear Husband. Saw the second tower, etc.

Our next moves that day were to fill tank with gas, call family, see if we needed to stay or go. We were in Colorado, but in-laws were within a day's drive in AZ if we needed to vector there.

Made the rest up as we went along. Ended up going to Grand Canyon as planned. Enjoyed the park, but eerie. No planes in the air. Stranded travelers. Hotels doing the best they could to accommodate those who could not get out as no one was getting in.

One of those "where were you" moments like when JFK was shot.

We were at Glacier National Park at the Many Glacier Lodge. One TV (in the bar area) and one pay phone. A hundred of us crowded around, trying to see what was happening.

We finally just went for a hike, because there was nothing else we could do. I have never hiked so angry, until, as Laura and I were totally alone on the trail, we came across a group of mountain sheep that just headed down the trail towards us. We stepped to the side, and the trotted by no more than 3 feet away. The world moves on.

I too remember it like it was yesterday. My husband was supposed to have surgery--possible/probable renalectomy--that day but it was delayed because he caught a bad cold, so we were sleeping in separate rooms in order to keep me healthy for my role as caregiver. I got up, made coffee, and turned on my computer. First thing I saw was a message from a friend in Europe that read, "I am so sorry for your country, what a tragedy." I ran to the TV....
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

As a water quality biologist for Ohio EPA I was out early that day sampling a mine acid stream with an intern from Hawaii who was quite talkative so we didn't have the radio on. While sampling near a trailer the owner came down and I thought "O.K. here it goes" as in "get off my lawn", but no, he just wanted to tell us what was going down. We finished our sample sites, took the samples to the office and were told to go home.
