WTN: One in a Milon

by Jenise » Mon Sep 07, 2020 12:08 pm

Someone in our pod had a significant birthday last weekend so five couples gathered on his lawn to celebrate with hamburgers last Saturday night. I took these anticipating I'd be bringing the best wines there:

2004 Château Clerc Milon Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend
In the peak zone in a wonderful way. Great nose of old books and leather armchairs, splendid fruit with lots of secondary action on the palate, great finish. I have a case, time to dig in.

2010 Boudreaux Cellars Merlot Washington
Pulled cork, tasted, got excited, thought "nailed it!" But the wine didn't last in the glass. Given the vintage and winemaker (from whom I purchased this directly), miscalculated in thinking ten years not too much to ask. Oh well, drink up!
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

I do love 2004 Bordeaux.

Didn't buy many '04s, came down to whatever I lucked into at the time. My favorite of the vintage so far: Palmer. Clerc Milon is not at all in the same camp, of course, but it was a quarter of the price. Couldn't go wrong.

Sure looks like a good price to me....

Our LWS has these for <$20. Any thoughts, anyone?

Puygeraud sounded familiar so I checked CT. I actually still have a 2000 Cuvee Georg from them, but I have no idea what the Georg is or was relative to their regular line. For the straight Puygeraud, I read thru the notes on the first page. Every other one is praise, and the ones in between were definitely not impressed. Could well be the difference between old and new world palates. One of the positive notes probably nailed the essence with this: "new world fans will appreciate this as an introduction to the old world" but of course the caveat is that new world drinkers need to be open-minded enough to embrace Bordeaux's savory restraint. Which they usually aren't.

Palmer is really good. Only had it twice, and never bought any myself. Still love the ‘04 Barton.
