WTN: Rhone in the Zone

by Pat G » Sun Sep 06, 2020 6:08 pm

Carlson Creek Mourvedre, 2014, Arizona (Camp Verde). This was a new release in 2017 when we visited the tasting room, Scottsdale Wine Trail. That morning, we'd visited a Western museum. Lots of beautiful saddles on display. So there could have been some bias, but this was the first wine I've ever tasted that clearly had aromas of leather. A few baking spices, maybe, but very subtle. Fast forward to 2020. The wine seems to have transitioned from New World to Old World. All aromas more subtle, wine seems smoother, rounder. Leather is still there, but mushroom has emerged as co-dominant. Spices are more distinct: nutmeg, cinnamon. Red fruits: cherry, raspberry, cranberry. (Note to Jenise: no oak detected !) Total price $26. And I usually don't say this, but QPR above average given the complexity and the compelling nature of the transition. Based on 2 days of tasting. Plenty left to enjoy over the remainder of the holiday weekend.

Despite our heat wave, I just wanted to open a red. I'm glad I did.

Sounds good. Lighter fruit than I associate with mourvedre (cranberry) but not a problem--I do love that grape.

Just love the learning, Jenise. Seeing how wine evolves over time. Seeking out not well known vintners. Etc. Especially appreciate it now that traveling/tasting won't be an option for a while. Abundance of caution.

This, too, shall pass.

So have you had a mouvedre from Bandol? For most of us here, that's the benchmark mourvedre all others are compared against.

Yes, but only at trade tastings/seminars. Not a bottle purchased for home to enjoy over time. For home, have a Tables Creek (Paso) and a Rose' of Mourvedre from Tercero (Santa Barbara).

Tercero does great with mourvedre; his rose's great but it won't inform you about the grape. I sense that, like me, you enjoy finding a benchmark against which to think about similar wines in the future--if I'm right, Bandol's something you should experience.

Or explore some of Hardy Wallace’s Dirty & Rowdy Mourvèdre. He has a real handle on the grape.
