WTN: Idlewild Barbera & Dolcetto '16....(short/boring)

by TomHill » Thu Sep 03, 2020 3:12 pm

Tried these two early in the week:
1. Idlewild Barbera FoxHillVnyd/MendoCnty (14.1%) Geyserville 2016: Dark color; strong spicy/Barbera/dried Italian spices/dried oregano rather earthy/dusty light toasty/oak fairly complex nose; quite tart/tangy/acidic rather earthy/dusty strong Barbera/spicy/dried Italian herbs/Italian sausage/pizza spicesslight MendoCnty/tomatoey light toasty/oak quite tangy/angular flavor w/ some tangy tannins; very long very tart/tangy/acidic/angular/bit austee strong Barbera/dried herbs/Italian sausage rather earthy finish w/ some tangy tannins; a classic acidic Barbera that still needs a few yrs age yet; more like an Alto Piemonte Barbera than Asti/Alba Barbera; somewhat earthy/rustic in character but very Italianate.

2. Idlewild Dolcetto FoxHillVnyd/MeendoCnty (11.5%) 2016: Med.color; some fruity/grapey/Dolcetto slight earthy/dusty rather pretty lightweight nose; quite tart/tangy/metallic rather grapey/fruity/Dolcetto some earthy/dusty flavor w/ light tangy tannins; long very tart/tangy/metallic/acidic some austere/lean some earthy/dusty finish w/ light tannins; a somewhat pretty/low-key Dolcetto but lacks the strong grapiness of Italian Dolcetto; a pretty/quiet/tangy Dolcetto but just that.

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. I liked the Barbera quite a lot. It showed more rustic Italian character than most Calif Barberas with that Italian lean/hard character. The Dolcetto struck me as a bit on the lean/austere/eviscerated side & would have liked a bit more richness.

I normally drink up the Dolcetto pretty quickly. I don't want the tannins/austerity to win out. The Barbera handles a few years of age better. The best one of them to age IMO is the Flora & Fauna Red blend. That seems to take some of the best of everything, and fold it all together. Of course it's so tasty I drink it all up too quickly.

Yup....seems to be the same problem I have as well, David.
