WTN: Special occasion

by Jenise » Fri Aug 28, 2020 4:40 pm

For my birthday Wednesday night:

1996 Albert Morot Beaune 1er Cru Les Toussaints Pinot Noir
A two hour decant delivered the goods on this excellent bottle. A fully mature light to medium bodied wine, it offered notes of sour cherry pie, potpourri, tea and antique leather. Fine for sipping alone but fairly ideal paired with canapes of seared foie gras on sourdough toast and not bad with the romaine/tarragon/pea/sourdough crumb salad that followed. THEN:

2001 Château Haut-Brion Pessac-Léognan Red Bordeaux Blend

Splash decanted then left uncorked for about five hours. Which might have been too long; though it wasn't lost by any means, it was maybe 10-20% less interesting, less potent, later than it had been when first uncorked. None of the blueberry action others report recently, but full of that minerally red-dirt, iron-rich black cherry fruit typical of Graves. So very very good; just not quite as much oomph as one might expect from a First, and I've had better '01s from lesser properties. Still, felt very special with parmesan-crusted rack of lamb.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Happy birthday, and two lovely wines.

2001 is one of those years that actually seems better for the lower growths. It's not a year for fireworks, and that's often what sets the firsts apart. 2001 Latour was delicious, but not transformative.

Happy belated birthday, Jenise. Wines look quite interesting. Re: the Pinot Noir, any thoughts on other, more recent vintages? Price does not look too bad via CT. Curiosity.

No. This was my last of three bottles and I picked all of them up about ten years ago when they were already into their second decade. Never had a young one. It's a Beaune, which is why prices don't look bad. The reds from this district, even a 1er cru like this, don't excite the cognoscenti so tend to be priced accordingly. Fine with me, who likes them!

I quite like Beaune reds as well. Does that make us incognoscenti?

One foot in the Graves after the decanting?

Beaune 1ers crus can be delightful. I've had many excellent ones from Bouchard Pere & Fils and from Jadot.

Happy birthday, Jenise!

Well, not Code Blue, but let's just say that it's dancing days are over. :)

And glad to meet another who has nice things to say about Beaune reds. They don't get a lot of attention on the secondary market, where I've bought most of my older bottles. I'm happy they don't, as they're reasonable to acquire with the kind of age on them I just absolutely love.
