2013 Nigl Riesling 1ÖTW Privat Pellingen - Austria, Niederösterreich, Kremstal (8/19/2020)
Not sure how to express the whole of this, other than beguiling. The wine swirls through the mind, tracing echoes of fruit, but also waves of tension, along with an undercurrent of electricity. Just when it seems as though it is poised to strike, it brings out a soft blanket of creaminess, buffering the shock, caressing For just a moment, before it sinks it’s metallic nails in for another shot.

You don't see a lot of notes or comments about Nigl, but their rieslings and GVs are outstanding at every level. And they age so well too; perhaps their need for age to really shine is a factor in the lack of wine blog presence. I guess Austrian wines more generally don't get a great deal of attention as well...

The need for age is the primary reason I don't talk about Nigl much. I am always waiting for the "right" time.

I do love Austrian wine. I do not drink enough of it.

Agreed. So much wine, so little time!

I really like Nigl, especially GVs and Rieslings that have been labeledPrivat. I think most were from Senftenberg Piri. What does 1OTW mean?

Pretty sure it’s an Austrian “cru” designator.

Best gruner I ever had was a 99 Nigl Privat in approximately 2009. I'm not sure I've even laid eyes on a bottle since.

Nigl was a regular exhibitor at a Belgian importer of mainly Spanish and New World wines, whose annual tastings I used to attend most years. His range always stood out for focus, purity and balance, particularly in the company of so many blockbusters.

Come fall I need to do some cellar digging, as I have a '97 and '99 Nigl Grüner lurking down there somewhere.
