WTN: Penfolds St. Henri 2004

by Jay Labrador » Wed Aug 19, 2020 7:39 am

Lockdown Wine #50. Starting to go garnet on the edge, although the core is still pretty dark. On the nose, ripe black fruit, dusty, black pepper, bacon, a touch hot. . Juicy, ripe, but not overly so. Sweetness well balanced by acidity. Soft. Ripe black berries. Fig. Very harmonious and so easy to drink. Sweet spices, roast meat. Good length, but not exceptional. Clean, dry finish. Could probably go on a few more years before peak, but an excellent drink now.

That sounds lovely. Sadly the retail on this cuvee has passed $120 US, so it's a no-go for me.

The St. Henri is my favorite in the Penfolds line-up.

And I owned five bottles of this vintgage at one time--they were priced $44 ea, but somehow they scanned at something like $1.44. Did I complain? NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Unfortunately Penfolds prices here are now out of reach for me as well. Stopped buying several years back. Good thing I have a decent amount up to the 2005 vintage across most of the premium lines, except Grange, which I stopped buying after the '99.

Thanks for the note, I still have two bottles of this in the cellar, and will start thinking about trying one soonish. Yes, all Penfold wines have been crazy over priced for a number of years, and they just seem to sit on the shelves here. The two St Henri were the last Penfold's wines I purchased.
