WTN: A Dog and A Griffin Walk Into a Lair....(short/boring)

by TomHill » Sat Aug 15, 2020 4:11 pm

Doing my best to channel DavidBeuker & Jenise, I tried these two wines the other night:
1. Via Revolucionaria Torrontes Brutal Passionate Wine (12.5%; 47 yr old vines; 60 days fermentation on skins & stems; BrazasWineImprts/Brooklyn) Matias Michelini/UcoVlly/Tupungato/Mendozo/Argentina 2019: Deep golden color/bit bronze/browning color; rather toasty/charred/burnt strong phenolic/resiny/skin-contact bit frmted orange juice little fruit some mousey/natty quite earthy/bizarre/unattractive nose; quite tart/tannic rather mousey/natty strong phenolic/skin-contact quite earthy no Torrontes fruit flavor; long rather tart/tannic earthy/natty/mousey/hantavirus some toasty/charred/burnt unpleasant finish w/ dreadful natty/wet dog fur/hantavirus aftertaste that goes on & on, thoroughly trashing the palate; a natural wine hitting on all 4 cylinders of ugliness; undrinkable/dreadful unless you're into self-flagellation. $21.50 (KK)
_________
2. BedrockWineCo Syrah Griffin'sLairVnyd/PetalumaGap/SonomaCoast/SonomaCnty (80% w-c; 14.5%; 12% Viognier; 8 brls) 2012: Dark color w/ slight bricking; strong w-c/quite Rhonish/roasted strong blackberry/boysenberry/Syrah slight alcoholic strong c-c/black pepper quite complex nose; rather tart/tangy strong w-c/Rhonish/roasted/bit herbal strong blackberry/c-c Syrah/black pepper bit rough/rustic light toasty/oak complex flavor w/ some chewey/crunchy tannins; very long/lingering strong w-c/Rhonish/roasted strong blackberry/c-c Syrah/black pepper complex finish w/ ample crunchy tannins; lots of w-c/roasted/Rhonish character w/ a rather rough/rustic/tannic character; needs another 3-5 yrs but may not outlast the tannins; quite an interesting c-c Syrah.
_____________
A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. Brutal: Pretty apt description of this wine. Natural wine in all its worst manifestations. So tannic to be pretty much undrinkable. Even worse the next day.
__________
2. David/Jenise: Feel free to suggest an alternative title that will make the TN even more of a head-scratching puzzle and more obscure. Your minds are more creative than mine.

I'm honored to be mentioned in the same sentence with David!

The Griffin sounds really, really good and a lot like the only other Griffin I've had, a 2010 Pax. Your note ups my antennae for wines from this vineyard.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov
