WTN: 18 Gaudry Sancerre 86 Chanson Corton

by Bill Spohn » Sat Aug 15, 2020 12:59 pm

Had a couple of nice wines with lunch yesterday, noteworthy enough to record.

2018 Vincent Gaudry Sancerre Le Tournbride – interesting wine as it wasn’t as steely dry as most are. Nice citrus (lemon plus a hint of lime) fruit in the nose and an initial impression of sweetness that may have been an artefact of rich fruit rather than actual RS, followed by a long dry finish. A schizophrenic wine that seemed the antithesis of the usual Sancerre at first but finished in a conventional approved fashion. Over all good impression, though.

1986 Chanson Corton – the only grand cru in the cote de Beaune, but from a year that was indifferent for the most part, so expectations were...tempered. Pretty good colour - mahogany with uniform tan edges. Nose was encouraging with hints of black tea and forest floor. Tasted it to ensure it was still sound and then let it sit for a bit. The wine started to open up and just kept getting better and better (it would be almost beneath even me to suggest that the Chanson was singing, but... and you probably knew I was a low type when I failed to call forest floor ‘sous bois’) Very decent length and a good bottle that held for an hour and more – it never did begin to decline by the time we finished it. Sometimes you get lucky....

I just love you for this. No pun shall go unspoken....

Not a wine for the Great Pumpkin, then (not Sancerre enough).

Yeah - it finished up well, but is not for those that value crispness all the way through the experience. I wouldn't want this particular Sancerre if presented with a platter of raw oysters, for instance.

BTW, if I want to stump people in a blind tasting, (don't listen, Jenise!) I have successfully done so several times by serving a red Sancerre. many people ignore the fact that there is Pinot Noir form this AOC and just guess the usual candidates - Burgundy, maybe New Zealand, possibly even Germany, but rarely the Loire.

The last red Sancerre I had, an 09 Lucien Crochet La Croix du Roy, was served blind and indeed fooled--it had a green olive note unusual to pinot, and it had the ripeness of a California wine.
