K&L "Mystery Case"?

by wnissen » Wed Aug 12, 2020 7:50 pm

Has anyone tried out the K&L Mystery Case? The claim is that the bottles would retail for $15 each so they're a third off. The are the leftovers from K&L cellar purchases, apparently. I don't know, K&L is not a "focused" store where I'd feel comfortable taking a slice of everything, and this adds the uncertainty of storage. Could be a fun way to try some obscure wines, though. I bet there are plenty of unsaleable candidates in my cellar that would end up in a mystery case!

Nope, never tried. 33% off is not enough for me to buy random stuff. Unless maybe If it were Chambers St and from their own stock. Stuff that came as detritus in cellar purchases is not appealing to me.

I don;t know if anyone remembers the Garagiste "German Mystery Cases" a few years back. Supposedly a huge stash of "German" wines dating back to the 30s. What virtually everyone got (for $250-300 a 3 pack) was a three bottles of things like Hugel Gewurz, state co-op base wines, or Austrian producers no one has heard of, from 70s and 80s. I don't think I've ever seen a mystery case where I thought "wow, if I had known what that was, I'd have jumped on it!"

To me this might be appealing to someone just into wine who had no confirmed preferences, but even then. I think the mystery works in favor of the store, not the customer.

But if you got I'd be interested in what was in one.

Indeed. These price savings do not entice and frankly I'm not sure what amount of savings would entice for wine that I'd probably rather not drink anyway!

But of course I am (and we are) pickier than most people. Seems more geared towards the casual wine drinker (as opposed to wine geeks).

What Dale said. Most likely the mystery works in favor of the store, not the customer.
