WTN: Guigal Hermitage 2007

by Jay Labrador » Mon Aug 03, 2020 8:23 am

Lockdown Wine #45. We're back to a more stringent lockdown starting tomorrow to give the hospitals 2 weeks to recover. Hope it works, but with this government's ineptitude, I'm not too sure. Anyway, more leftover pizza and whatever else we found in the ref for an eclectic dinner tonight, so didn't feel like opening anything too special. This Guigal Hermitage seemed to be good enough to go with everything.

Still pretty dark, although there is a little bit of brick on the rim. Not a bad nose. Ripe black fruit, some earth, spice, cocoa, coffee. Much nicer than I expected. Soft, tannins gone, but enough acidity to give it a good structure. Spicy, quite rich and juicy. Ripe fruit again. Perhaps not as interesting as the nose, but can't complain. Decent length. Fair amount of sediment. Probably about peak now and it should stay that way for a couple of years yet. Not bad at all, and a nice, easy drink.

Is it priced in the nice, easy drink range? Guigal Hermitage has gotten much more expensive around here.

This was something like $ 30.00 when I got it (on sale). Not exactly cheap, but not bad for the quality. This was about 7 years ago according to my records.

$30's cheap to me, for anything called Guigal or Hermitage at any rate! I've always loved Guigal.

Tough situation in the hospitals. I just cancelled two long-standing doctor appts this week--nothing urgent, and things are still too bad 'out there' to leave home if we don't have to.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov
