WTN: Two Whites With Dinner....(short/boring)

by TomHill » Sun Jul 19, 2020 11:16 am

Had these two gems w/ our Olathe Sweet Corn Risotto last night:
1. Venica&Venica Malvasia Dd'OC: Collio (13.5%; GiulianaImprts/Boulder ) Venica&Venica di Gianni e Giorgio Venica/Dolegna del Colio/Friuli 2017: Med.dark gold color; strong floral/gardenias/Malvasia/slight muscatty light chalky/earthy/mineral some complex nose; fairly tart/tangy rather floral/Malvasia/gardenias light pineapple/R-like light steely/chalky/mineral lightly spicy bright/zippy Malvasia d'I flavor; very long rather tart/tangy/zippy some rich/textured strong floral/Malvasia/gardenias light chalky/mineral/tangy/steely finish; quite a lovely Md'I w/ a nice balance of floral/Malvasia & minerality. $33.00 (SFW&S)
________
2. TheEyrieVnyds ChasselasDore DundeeHills/OR (9.5%) 2017: Med.gold color; light pear/floral/fragrant/almost R-like bit Alpine flowers/edelweiss slight earthy quite aromatic nose; lightly tart/tangy/metallic some Alpine white/floral/bright light bodied light earthy lovely perfumed flavos; med. bright/tart/tangy light bodied rather Alpine flower/floral/edelweiss/pear almost R-like finish; quite a pretty Alpine flower white; a wine that gracefully pirouettes across the palate like a fairy in SwanLake; quite a pretty white that is not at all lean & eviscerated. $28.00 (SFW&S)
_____________
A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. The Malvasia is, of course, the Malvasia d'Istriana from Croatia. I much prefer Md'I to the standard Malvasia Bianca.
________
2. ChasselasDore is a grape variety that originated in the western Swiss Alps of the Jura. Known in Suisse as Fendant. In Calif as GoldenChasselas. In Baden as Gutadel. Regarded as the ideal match for fondue & raclette.
I was expecting, at 9.5% alcohol, a lean/thin/eviscerated white. It was not. A delicate rather ethereal Alpine-like white.

Tom, both wines sound fascinating. What are your thoughts on drinking windows? I've had Malvasia Bianca but that's as similar as it gets.

Oregon continues to show innovation in white varietals. Understand that most Swiss Chasselas stays in-country which makes finding it domestically a challenge.

FWIW your notes aren't boring to me. Thanks!

Pat,

Unless you are posting on the same wine, or commenting on a prior post, it makes more sense for you to put up a separate tasting note.

Mea culpa, David. Oops, Tom.

My note above edited per David's feedback. The learning continues.

Well, Pat.... neither one of these will much benefit from additional age is my guess.

MalvasiaBianca, which is the most common Malvasia worldwide, tends to have a very perfumy, almost Muscatty aroma, rather tutti fruity in character, a bit on the simple side. Malvasia d'Istriana shows a much more subtle aromatics , often with some minerality, a bit more complex. Malvasia from Friuli/Slovenia/Croatia is almost always Md'I. No Md'I planted in Calif to my knowledge.

Thanks, Tom.

Actually the last Malvasia B I tasted was from Arizona Stronghold, Cochise County, AZ. At their tasting room near Sedona. We liked it, but the Viognier was better. Drank the 2013 during 2018 and it clearly was a "drink now" wine.

Will keep an eye out for Collio wines at our LWS. They are pretty creative and things turn up.

Cheers!

No mea culpa needed. Just makes sense to have a separate thread, so that it’s easier to find.
