WTN: Tignanello 2013

by Jay Labrador » Thu Jul 16, 2020 8:24 am

Lockdown Wine #39. Still on curfew and liquor ban in some parts of the city. Took home a couple of pizzas and didn't want to open a full bottle so it's the Tignanello 2013 again in 375 ml.

Deep purple. Surprisingly soft and forward despite not much airing before drinking. Sweet cherry. Very easy to drink. Great with a couple of pizzas and stood up quite well against a spicy spaghetti arrabiata. Maybe a bit of bottle variation going on, but this was definitely more approachable than previous bottles.

Still sounds yummy. We had pizza last night as well. I opened a California wine that is based on Sicilian grape varieties. Good match.

Jay, you remind me that I had that duff bottle of '08; hoping for better, I've meant to open/enjoy my remaining bottle but haven't yet. I want to enjoy it with a classic spaghetti/red sauce.

I had the '08 a couple of months ago. It is drinking beautifully now. It can still take some age, but doesn't really need it. You won't be disappointed.

Jay, I opened the '08 last night: was slightly disappointed, unfortunately. It wasn't undrinkable like it's cellar-mate of a few months ago, but it lacked the freshness that older Tigs can have, and that all had when the Tig road show came thru back in January had. The bottles must have had some heat exposure after leaving the winery.

Ah, too bad. We had a whole bunch of Antinori '08s when we did the Tignanello and all were very nice.
