WTN: Martini contest

by Jenise » Sat Jul 11, 2020 3:36 pm

So last night we got together with two other couples for a martini contest. Same couple as involved in last month's Manhattan contest, plus their pregnant daughter and her metrosexual Amazon exec husband up from Seattle. One each martini was made from five different gins, then divided five ways, so the portions were deliberately small--but enough. The mother-to-be took a tiny sip of each from her husband's glasses. Each glass held a tiny lemon twist. The vermouth was Dolin dry.

I made appetizers to go with the gins. To keep things distant but graceful, each couple got a square plate with three small pots (ramekins) containing: swordfish brandade, green pea hummus, smashed cucumbers with dill & chiles, and a pile of homemade sourdough crisps. I know food pairing for alcohol isn't exactly a 'thing', but I didn't want anyone drinking on an empty tummy and it made sense to play to gin's strengths. The generosity of herbs d'Provence in the brandade for the botanicals, the lemony sweetness of the peas for juniper and forest elements, and the salty freshness of the cucumbers for everything else (no vinegar) were all flavors that I imagined would speak, albeit differently, to the spice and botanical elements in the gins. And they really did.

Did we have a clear winner? YES!!! The Bluecoat from Philadelphia got five first place votes, all but one--incredibly complex and attractive nose, great on the palate. Here's how the voting went:

Bluecoat, Philadelphia: kaleidoscopic array of citrus and florals on the nose, bright and light on the palate, elegant finish. Not what you'd call perfumey or feminine, just unusually aromatic without being weird in any way. This one loved the peas.

Heritage Douglas Fir Gin, Bainbridge Island WA: smelled like a Christmas tree lot in December, plenty of juniper too and an element that reminded this wino of American oak. Intriguingly different, but not weird. Particularly good with the cucumbers.

Plymouth (England? Not sure): not much nose at all, but very balanced and silky on the palate. A good all-around gin with no sharp edges, you could blend it with anything, and it had the smoothest finish. This got the only first place vote that didn't go to the Bluecoat.

Bellewood Acres, Bellingham WA: the most outwardly botanical with the roughest finish. Not only did it pair well with the brandade, it almost needed the brandade to make it friendly. Best for a dirty martini, however. Olives would accentuate the botanicals where lemon just got in the way.

Bombay Sapphire: the sweetest by far with a mouth-coating viscosity that stood out from the others. My least favorite of the night. That said, it with the peas was maybe THE best food pairing of the night.

And lastly, I have to give a shout out to High Hitch from London, which was so spectacular and likely irreplaceable that we deemed it too good for the martini contest.

No Tanqueray? Wonder how it would have fared.

Maybe not refined or developed to the point of wine and food pairing, but certainly a logical endeavor and sounds like you did a great job.

It would have fared very well, I think. Dr. Kinzer's contributions were the Plymouth and the Sapphire, which is his "house gin". All the others were mine. And if the event had been at my home, Tanqueray (regular) would have definitely been in the line-up--not that I'm very experienced, I'm not, but it has been my favorite among the 'usual suspects'. Already knew I'm not a Bombay girl--too sweet. Chuck hadn't realized how sweet it is until doing this comparison, and he would happily trade it for Bluecoat if he could get it (Bob and I brought it back from Philadelphia last year.)

The ultimate decision for what went in or not was made by Dr. Kinzer as this was at his home. Was originally going to be here but when Alexa and Ryan came up we relocated due to the added presence of a two year old and a black poodle.

Oh, one we tried to include but couldn't find: The Botanist.

I'm sure! It's available in our market area, I've owned it in the past. But in Covid times, stocking is somewhat haphazard.

Bill, yesterday for "happy hour" I made two short martinis: one used up the last of the Bainbridge gin so we could throw the bottle away (yay! more room in the hooch cupboard!), and the other with Tanqueray for comparison. My prediction was correct--they were very, very similar, but the Tanqueray was much brighter in a umami sort of way and easily won both our votes. Then we had two tiny sips of the Tanqueray vs. the Bluecoat, straight. Our judgement was immediate and unanimous: Bluecoat! Just as bright, but way more complex. Were it available here, it would easily become our house gin--no need to look any further.

Interesting tasting.

I've been doing the same thing with single malts - my comparative tasting has been going for several years!

With so much time on our hands, it's been entertaining to have these "contests". Our spouses come along for the ride, but Chuck (a just-retired professor of technology at Columbia NY) and I are the ones who love these analytical sessions. And it's been fun doing a cocktail format vs. just evaluating the hooch alone. After this one, we carted a huge pile of seafood over to the beach and cooked it in wine, garlic and butter on an open fire and popped a few nice whites. As Covid evenings go, didn't suck.

He wants to do Tequila next. Told him we're game for anything except vodka. :)

Ooh wow. Just discovered that Blue Coat is for sale in WA. Just $30/bottle. New house gin, done!

I used to keep a large bottle of Tanqueray in my freezer (which is set at about -10 F. Good for accompanying the Quinine water when I thought I might have felt a touch of malaria coming on....which in a hot summer can happen frequently

And Angostura of course.

PS - why do they have to jigger about with good old liquors - Flor de Sevilla orange Tanqueray???

Or Hendrick's Orbium and Midsummer Solstice. Or Bombay Sapphire East.

Definitely a concern now that you live near an open water source! You should probably double down...for your health, of course.

I shall advise She-who-must-be-obeyed that I have taken expert advice on amount of Quinine to take and must accordingly increase dosage. Must get new bottle of Tanqueray in the freezer!
