WTN: 2006 Produttori del Barbaresco

by David M. Bueker » Tue Jul 07, 2020 6:46 pm

2006 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco (7/7/2020)
Lot 9.120

Just starting to unfurl. For the first 30 minutes it was bottle sick, and a bit angry. The next 30 minutes it started to show more. Fast forward to 90 minutes and dinner is ready. So is the wine. The rose petal nuances emerge to supplement burnished red fruit and worn leather. The tannins underscore everything. It’s a weighted blanket of complexity, comforting and familiar. There is still plenty of material for further cellaring, but it seems to be on a plateau. I would be happy to drink this every night this week, if someone else would cook the food for it.

Does this imply that you find cooking food to match the Barbaresco more challenging/annoying than cooking to match other wines?

I am not a Northern Italian specialist. My skills are with other cuisines.

Spot on for every wine the Produttori make.

You mean like the Asian food I often see you mentioning?

Maybe it's different when eating meat, but for a pescatarian like myself, basic pasta with mushrooms is fine. Or risotto. Or polenta. All relatively simple. But then again I mostly drink wine on the weekends and wouldn't want to eat that rotation of three dishes all week!

Yeah, I make a ton of Indian and Thai. Mostly vegetarian these days. My wife hates mushrooms, so it kills so many good ideas. I do need to make a risotto again sometime soon though. That I can do. I can even use mushrooms if I make sure the pieces are big enough for her to give them to me. :)

Barbaresco. All I have is a 2009 Paitin. Looks like our LWS had the following:

Corte alla Flora 2016 Barbaresco

Close-up shot shows DOCG. Pounce opportunity?

Any thoughts on either of the above?

I would be very cautious. Looks like Corte alla Flora is Tuscan producer. You'd be better off looking for the Produttori (co-op, but greatest co-op in the wine world). Actually, the Produttori del Barbaresco makes a Langhe Nebbiolo that is very good, less expensive, and easier to drink young. Just my $0.02

All Barbaresco is DOCG. IMO all DOCG does is guarantee the provenance of the grapes and some vinification procedures. The producer and vintage year are very important. I know nothing about Corte alla Flora.

Thanks for insights. Knew that all Produttori was DOCG, but felt compelled to check the bottle shot anyway. We do not need any wine right now, period. Still working through unneeded wines bought to support small vintners due to CV19. Sigh..

It keeps...no need to rush and drink recent acquisitions.
