What is the meaning of your wine hobby?

by stas.medvedev » Thu Jun 25, 2020 9:27 am

I am doing research for my new articles and will highly appreciate for your self reflection on the subject.

Can you please elaborate on what do you see as the purpose of your wine hobby/passion?

Interesting way of framing the question in terms of 'purpose'. Surely all hobbies/passions provide pleasure for people's lives, although the way in which that pleasure plays out will vary. For me, I get pleasure from things that are enjoyable on a physical/visceral level as well as an intellectual level, and offer plenty of opportunities for ongoing learning and deepening.

Hedonism. I like good wine, and especially wine with some age on it. It's difficult, risky, expensive, and sometimes just impossible to buy aged wine on the retail or auction market. So I buy it young and cellar it myself.

All of the above. It's endlessly fascinating, and I like to live well.

It's a drink, it's food, and it gives pleasure to both the senses and to the mind. I enjoy it sensually but also enjoy it intellectually. You can do that with most food and drink, but wine makes it easy. In fact, for me, it would seem silly to enjoy wine without engaging my mind, and that makes it special. I don't collect, and I rarely buy wine over $20 to $25, but even in this QPR range I try not to waste my bucks on wine that doesn't give me something to think about.
