WTN: Is Nice!

by Patchen Markell » Mon Jun 22, 2020 9:22 pm

Cascina Iuli 2018 Vino Bianco "Barat." The first vintage of a 100% Baratuciat, from vines planted in 2015 near Monferrato. Baratuciat, according to the producer, is a grape indigenous to the Val di Susa, to the west of Torino, whose name means "cat testicles" in the local dialect because of its small oval berries. This is an unusual and very appealing wine: it has the weight of a richer white, something from the Rhône or even a bigger Gewürz, starting off ripe and slightly tropical -- but then there's a turn on the palate and the wine becomes quite sharply focused and finishes crisp, bright, clean, and a little citrusy. It's delicious, and I'm definitely going back for more. Tom Hill, you gotta try it-- because of your love of obscure Italian varieties, I mean, not because you share a name with the kitty whose clusters are on the label. :-)
cheers, Patchen

Thanks for the head's up on this wine, Patchen. I've heard the grape name but have never seen the wine. I'm friends with Bianca on Facebook, so will contact her about tracking some done.
You scooped TomHill on an obscure Italian wine... congrats!!
Tom
