WTN: 2015 Tantalus Old Vines Riesling

by Bill Spohn » Mon Jun 15, 2020 4:11 pm

Felt like listening to much of the David Bowie Sound + Vision box set on clear vinyl and figured that the only suitable wine to accompany the Thin White Duke (one of his 1970s personae) would be a steely Riesling.

Tantalus makes some of the most consistently excellent Riesling in BC. I prefer it with a few years of age on it and this was just getting there.

Light yellow in colour with a fairly intense petrol based nose with some very nice apple and pear grace notes coming through with a bit of time. Luscious fruit flavours and a long clean finish, very dry. Very pleasurable mouthful.

I intend to match some vintage of this wine with a bottle of Pewsey Vale Contours, another excellent Riesling I've tasted recently. It will be interesting to see the outcome. The dry finish and style is something they have in common. I think I'll save Ziggy Stardust for that encounter.

Hmm - this could become an interesting exercise - wonder what wine you'd pair with Mahler? I am not generally a fan, but maybe you know the story of Gilbert Kaplan, a well heeled American businessman who became obsessed with Mahler's second symphony, to the point where he wanted to conduct it - and did, dozens of times and he produced very good performances including a couple that were recorded. I have them on digital and vinyl - any suggestions on wine accompaniment?

Wine matches with music is an interesting little side study - see https://www.npr.org/sections/deceptivec ... with-music
(I like the Resphigi/Foradori match the best)

That will be an interesting matchup. I don't think I've had a Tantalus that was as dry (or perhaps I mean Austere) as the Pewsey Vales I've enjoyed, but yes they're terrific.

As for Mahler: big tannins, low acidity. :)
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Well if the Tantalus turns out to have too much RS I'll just keep on trocken until I find one that doesn't!

Tantalus was a great visit for us in 2018.
