Koppitsch Homok 2019 - Austria, Neusiedlersee; GV, Sauv Bl, Weissburgunder; 11% abv; c.27€ (ouch!)
Covid closed the restaurants so some natural lovelies that used to be only sold to restaurants are now available in our alcohol monopoly. They are almost as expensive as drinking them in those now closed restaurants but I'm such a sucker for natural wine that I still buy one of each new one as a special treat. Today's treat is a white blend. Homok means "sand" in Hungarian (the wine comes from the Hungarian border). The aromas are actually pretty conventional despite the hazy, scary look of the wine. Sweet, forward fruit aromas, herbaceous with a bit of Sauv Blanc grassy lift. Juicy palate, some astringency but that is just welcome to counter the sweet fruit. Very moreish to this lover of orange wine but conventional enough that I think those with open minds but with some bad experiences with overly harsh orange wines might enjoy it too!
