WTN: It’s all about the Mugnier

by David M. Bueker » Tue Jun 09, 2020 8:03 pm

  • 2008 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny (6/9/2020)
It’s always special to drink a fine Chambolle. This bottle epitomizes the concept. Elegant aromatics of red fruit, roses, fresh green herbs, lightly moistened earth and just the barest hint of decaying leaves, are followed up by a wonderfully lively palate presence. The fresh acidity invigorates me, and causes my mouth to water for the next sip. Suddenly half the bottle is gone, and I really don’t know where it went. Magic, evaporating Chambolle Musigny!

Nice work. Too bad one can't just go out and easily purchase such a wine. But that is the value of cellars.

Did this go through a sullen period? I have a bunch of 08s from Louis Boillot that I've been afraid to open. For the past few years there has been no sign that they will offer reasonable pleasure any time soon.

Not sure, as I only bought two, and drank one on release. 2008s have generally been tough sledding though. This was the first to bring real pleasure in a long time.

Great note, sad I didn't buy this (a few bottles of his Marechal NSG instead, which I'm holding off on). I like 2008 in general, but can be pretty closed, so almost every time I think of opening one I decide "let's find a 2007 instead"

I somehow managed to get my hands on a decent sized stash of 2008 Roumier Chambolle, and that has started to come around.
