WTN: Massican Chard HydeVnyd '17....(short/boring)

by TomHill » Sun Jun 07, 2020 10:15 am

We tried this last night:
1. Massican Chard HydeVnyds/Carneros/NapaVlly (100% Chard; 13.9%) Calistoga 2017: Med.dark gold color; strong very fragrant ripe/melony/Chard/lemony spicy/nutmeg slight honeyed light pencilly/oak very attractive nose; fairly tart/tangy fairly rich/lush strong melony/lemony/Chard/ripe/spicy/nutmeg slight metallic/tangy light pencilly lovely flavor; very long/lingering bright/zesty/Chard/melony/lemony/slight herbal fairly rich light pencilly/oak finish; lots of lush/ripe Chard fruit but a nice acidic backbone; should go out another 4-8 yrs; an absolutely delish Chard.
$30.00

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. Another winner from DanPetroski. I've been finding my tastes are circling back towards Calif Chard after too many yrs of ABC. This is one of the better ones I've had recently. It reminded me some of the old StonyHill Chards, but less oak and not quite as rich, but the same sort of structure.

Dan's rendition of Hyde is delicious. It's a completely different expression from what David Ramey does, and I love the contrast of two great wines made in very different ways.

FYI, Dan’s version is zero malo. Ramey is 100% malo, hence the different expressions. I love them both.

David, picked up some Matthiasons and Arnot-Roberts wines, too. It's time to get to know these producers.
