WTN: Dönnhoff Norheimer Dellchen Riesling Auslese GK 2006

by Jay Labrador » Wed Jun 03, 2020 8:54 am

Lockdown Wine #30. I'm going to continue the lockdown series because even though things are supposed to be more relaxed, there are still curfews, public transport is severely restricted, restaurants are still closed, and there are controls on how many people can get together (10).

Not a long note as this half bottle went very quickly and I didn't have much left over to analyze at length.Medium gold. Didn't bother to smell it. Went straight to tasting. Very rich, silky texture. Honey, red apples, peach, mango and butterscotch. A little bitter orange on the finish. Crazy good stuff. My wife and daughter, who rarely drink, asked for seconds. That's how good it was. Don't be mislead by the relatively short note. This wine is awesome!

Thanks for the note. I have a stash of this, and now I want to open one very soon!

Jay, David, Others, any recommendations on entry-level Dönnhoff? So many types listed on Wine Searcher.

I'll let David handle this. All the Dönnhoffs I've tried are Spätlese/Auslese. But in general, I don't think you can go wrong with any Dönnhoff.

So the Estate Riesling is about as good a $20 wine as there is on the planet. The Oberhauser Leistenberg Riesling Kabinett is also a great value. Both of those wines age quite well. Beyond that I would like to know your thoughts on residual sugar. Some entry level trocken wines do come to the states.

David, I noted that the Estate Riesling seems to be available for about $20 in CA. So I'll put it on my look-for list.

If you're asking me for RS preferences, Kabinett or Spatlese are fine based on my limited experience. No experience with Auslese or above.

At one trade tasting one of my contacts provided me with an under-the-table pour of JJ Prum 2016 Spatlese. 8% alcohol, delicious!

Enjoyed a Schafer Frohlich Nahe, 2013 a few years ago. A Kabinett.

That is useful context Pat. If you want to try a Donnhoff Spatlese at some point, the Kirschheck Spatlese is an undervalued (for Donnhoff) gem. Delightful stuff.
