At its best, Loire chenin joins Alsatian/Austrian/German Riesling and Chablis as my favourite white wine types. Here is a fine example pulled for a quiet home celebration of the 50th anniversary of our marriage. Thanks to Covid-19, a family gathering was impossible and all restaurants are closed until June at the earliest, but this paired with a sandre and a beurre blanc sauce was some compensation.
2005 Domaine Huet Vouvray Sec Le Haut-Lieu - France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray (09/05/2020)
This is lovely dry Vouvray outstanding for it seamlessness and harmony. Aromas of pineapple, quince, wax and fine minerals emerge from the nose and weave through the medium+ bodied palate together with a hint of sweetness perfectly balanced by lively mouth watering acidity, silky texture, good underlying gras leading to a quite long finish supported by gentle backbone. Colour is still paler than most 15 year old Vouvray and I guess that this wine can hold on a superb plateau like this for some time. Excellent.
