WTN: Bruno Pailliard Champagne, and Siran 2000

by Jay Labrador » Sun May 10, 2020 9:00 am

Mother's Day in Manila so 2 wines tonight.

Lockdown Wine # 24. Bruno Pailliard Champagne Brut Premiere Cuvée NV. Lemon rind. Medium weight. Steely, a little smoke? Unfortunately warmed up very fast in this brutal heat. Conditions not optimal for a fair tasting note. Still, enjoyed it while it was still cool.

Lockdown Wine # 25. Chateau Siran 2000. My last bottle of this wine. Youthful color. Deep purple, opaque. Classic Bordeaux nose. Cedar, pencil shavings. Fruit pretty much gone. Acidity sticking out a bit, but it could be because the wine is warming up real fast. Smoked meat. Not bad at all if the acidity wasn't so prominent. Still, this is likely due to less than optimal tasting conditions (way too hot here). Still a bit of tannin on the back. Good length. Maybe best to drink up in any case. A bit of history, the owners of Chateau Siran, the Miailhe family, have a long history of involvement in the Philippines, having been established here since around the mid 1800s. They still have substantial business interests in Manila and are frequent visitors here. The Philippine flag flies at Chateau Siran together with the EU flag (no French flag!).

The Siran advanced, or is 20 years the limit? I don’t have much experience with the specific wine.

I was able to try the Siran again a couple of days later as I had poured off a half bottle when I opened it. I think it's about entering peak now. So in good vintages, I would say Siran is good for 20 to 25 years. I have some experience with Siran in lesser vintages and it seems 15 years or so is about peak for good but not great vintages.
