We tried these two last night w/ dinner:
1. Forlorn-Hope Sihaya RibollaGialla VareVnyd/NapaVlly (13.30%; 77 cs) MattRorick/Fairfield 2013: Med.dark gold color; quite dusty/earthy/some root cellar fairly phenolic/resiny/skin-contact slight peppery/RG/little fruit somewhat complex nose; quite tart fairly tannic/austere strong phenolic/skin-contact/resiny slight peppery/RG/low fruit somewhat eartht/dusty/root cellar some complex flavor w/ some bitey tannins; very long slight RG/peppery fairly phenolic/resiny/skin-contact rather earthy/dusty/root cellar complex finish; not a whole lot of RG fruit and rather earthy/loamy; speaks mostly of a skin-contact white and needs food and room-temperature; reminds a lot of the Kabaj/GoriskaBrda RG.

2. Forlorn-Hope Sihaya RibollaGialla VareVnyd/NapaVlly (12.99%; 1077 cs) 2012: Deep gold/burnished bronze color; very strong orangey/orange blossom/almost orange muscat slight nutty/oxidative/almost sherry-like quite complex/exotic nose; quite tart/acidic fairly tannic somewhat orangey/orange muscat/honeyed/bit graham cracker bit nutty/oxidative slightly bitter very slight RG/peppery fairly earthy quite exotic flavor w/ some bitey tannins; very long rather tannic/bit bitter slight phenolic/resiny somewhat orangey/orange muscat/honeyed quite exotic finish w/ almost no RG fruit; almost seems like a skin-contact orange muscat; quite an exotic/bizarre wine; needs food and room temperature; shows lots more age & complexity than the '13; reminds a lot of an older Gravner RG; beautiful/exotic wine.

1. Wow....the contrast between these two RG's were night & day. I suspect the winemaking was very similar in the two but the '12 showed a lot more age & was very exotic. Neither one had much RG fruit. Both were obviously made w/ skin-contact, which dominated the wines, particularly the '13. I liked both of these quite a lot but they're difficult to taste on their own and need food & room-temperature.
The VareVnyd is just North of Mathiasson. Planted originally by GeorgeVare with cuttings he brought back from JoskoGravner. Now known as the BengierVnyd, who purchased it from Elsa Vare after George died in 2013. A number of nut-case winemakers purchase and make RG from this vnyd.
