WTN: Yarra Yering Dry Red No. 1 2008

by Jay Labrador » Fri Apr 17, 2020 9:13 am

Lockdown Wine #14. I've had mixed success with this iconic Oz wine, but this one was rather nice.

Dark and youthful, but with a tinge of brown on the edge. Not too complex on the nose. General black berries with a strong hit of curry spice and cumin. Surprisingly sweet on entry. Red fruit - cherry, strawberry. Turns savory on the mid-palate. Bittersweet chocolate, smoke, pepper. Rather high acidity, but that's balanced by the fruit sweetness. Soft tannins. Pop and pour is fine. Good length although there's a touch of bitterness coming through at the end. Excellent at this stage, but no hurry to drink up.

66% Cabernet, 20% Merlot, 10% Malbec, 4% Petit Verdot.

Apparently, it's World Malbec Day. I hope the 10% Malbec in this is enough to celebrate it.

Dont give up on these Jay, they have really hit their stride the last couple of vintages. Cabernet blends aren't my thing but these got my attention. The 2016s are forward and approachable out of a warmer year and the 2017s are stunning,

Ah, if only the importer were still around. Sadly, they folded up a few years back. Hopefully someone else picks up this winery.

Know what you mean about 'mixed'. Because of their reputation I was so excited to get my hands on some long ago, but went from love to ambivalent over the course of owning them.
