A cellar first (and hopefully last)

by John S » Thu Apr 09, 2020 6:27 pm

Well, I've heard lots of stories from others, but I managed to kick a bottle of wine while I was rearranging my cellar. Luckily it was only a 2013 Lehmann Wigan Riesling that exploded, but the smell was quite something for quite a while. Many precious paper towels were used in the clean up on aisle 1!

Is there anyone out there who hasn't broken a bottle in their cellar?

I broke a bottle of Sauternes in the cellar once, smelled great for a looong time!

Been there, done that. It was a ridiculously expensive bottle too.

Also had a few get broken when they re-paved our street. That were using some massive hammer thing to break up the pavement, and it was like an earthquake. Two bottles were jostled out of their rack. Smash goes the Burgundy and Bordeaux.

Done it! And it was a champagne, a Jacquesson unfortunately. Those bubbles really GO!

Back when I was first getting started with wine my "cellar" was a closet in the apartment. The "shelving" was a stack of wine boxes on their sides. I had to keep the door open slightly to keep the cat from scratching on the door to get in. One day when I came home from work I found that the cat had gone into the wine closet, jumped on top of the stack of boxes, and tipped the stack over. I lost most of a case of 1983 Adam Albert Hattenheimer Wisselbrunnen Riesling Spaetlese that way.
