Kim Crawford is now Loveblock

by Peter May » Thu Apr 02, 2020 12:19 pm

Kim Crawford New Zealand wines are well known in USA; I have never seen the brand in UK or had the wines, so you may already know this.

There is an interview with Erica Crawford, wife of Kim, in South Africa magazine Wineland.

Erica is South African and met Kim in Paarl. Two and a half years later they were NZ with two babies. They started Kim Crawford Wines (KCW) in 1996 as a virtual winery, owing no assets, buying grapes, making the wine in someone else’s winery.

While other NZ wineries focussed on exporting to the UK, KCW went to the USA. Erica says the most crucial factor in the success of NZ wine was Lord of the Rings making American love NZ.

They sold KCW which ‘was absorbed into Constellation in 2006’.

They bought 58 ha in Awatere Valley (Marlborough, NZ) then more, which they farm organically with beef and vineyards under the name ‘Loveblock’.

Their model is now the opposite of KCW; they own the land and act as an estate making wines from their own vineyards.

I could find only one mention of Loveblock on this forum, which was by Jenise - http://forums.wineloverspage.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=60804&p=468017&hilit=loveblock#p468017.

I couldn’t find the article on the Wineland magazine website

Had no idea there was a connection. Have seen the Loveblock here and in Canada, though haven't had it since that restaurant visit way back when.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov
