WTN: Come on baby light my fire

by Jenise » Fri Mar 20, 2020 12:59 pm

A gift from a local friend:

2017 Mt. Boucherie Blaufränkisch Similkameen Valley VQA
This wine bears the very distinctive taste of smoke from the horrible fires that threatened vineyards in the summer of 2017. It's something that many (including the person who brought it to us) would in fact find especially appealing, along the same lines as charred barrels but different. I'm def not a fan of the latter. Too, the fire taste masks the boysenberry and cassis quality of PNW blaufrankisch fruit. For my own tastes, not a good trade.

Smoky-peaty scotch, heavily toasted wine barrels, and fire smoked grapes are three different flavors altogether. Like with all things, there's judicious/attractive, and then there's awful. This was awful. Yet obviously a friend loved it.

Smoke tainted wine generally smacks of ashtray to me, rather than an appealing smokiness.

Mezcal is smokey, but it tastes like creosote, or mothballs (naptha) to me.
