WTN: Valentine's weekend (Calon-Sugur, Clape, Mascarello, +)

by Dale Williams » Tue Feb 18, 2020 11:48 am

With fettucine with Bolognese, ricotta stuffed zucchini and mushrooms, & salad
2015 G. Mascarello “Toetto”Freisa. This is not the light slightly petillant style of the first Freisas I had, it’s more like the Vajra Kye, and is actually pretty tannic and forbidding on Tues night. By Friday the tannins and acid had receded, but so had the fruit. Fun to try, not so fun to drink. B-

Friday was fresh rice noodles with shrimp, Chinese sausage, and greens, Wine was the
2010 Emrich Schonleber “Monzinger Frühlingsplätzchen” Riesling Spätlese. Zippy and nervy, sweet apple and lime, floral, slatey minieral finish. Lovely and a pointe. B+/A-

2017 Clape Le Vin des Amis
I kind of thought this was the “drink now” bottling, while you wait 10-15 years for the CdR and 20+ for the Cornas. But this was pretty hard, there’s a little bacon, herb, and black fruit, but a bit closed. B/B-

Saturday we started with some Jonah crab claws with mustard dip, and smoked bluefish

2018 Hippolyte Reverdy Sancerre
Full style, bright acids, lemon/grapefruit and floral. Good. B+/B

Then rack of lamb, sweet potatoes, spinach, salad
1989 Ch. Calon-Segur
Opens well after hour in decanter. Full, ripe, but balanced, black cherry and plum, leather, hint of mocha. Tannins mostly resolved, lovely long finish. A-

A friend came to dinner Sunday, as Betsy tried out the paella pan I got her for Christmas.Appetizers of smoked oysters and hummus, sundried tomatoes, then chicken, chorizo, and shrimp paella, and salad

1998 Riojanos “Vina Albina” Rioja Gran Reserva
Vanilla and dill,.good acids, red fruit but a little clipped on back end.Have liked more before. B/B-

2016 Fraga do Corvo Godello (Monterrei)
Sweet fruit but tangy, citrus blossoms, apple and pear, good saline finish. B+

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C
drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice.Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

Nice selection.

Schonleber has all but disappeared from the market.

I enjoy Freisa when I am in Italy. At home, not so much.

One of my favorite producers of riesling, so elegant. Recently had an 09 spatlese trocken.
