2016 Hofgut Falkenstein Niedermenniger Herrenberg Riesling Kabinett feinherb - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (2/14/2020)
Spur of the moment that I opened this, so just at cellar temp, and no time for initial airing. Right out of the gate it showed electric acidity, bright citrus, Sweet Tart candy notes, salty minerality and quite a bit more palate sweetness than I was expecting. The overall balance worked well, I had just expected something a little drier. As the wine opened up over the next two hours it picked up additional complexity, with leafy and spicy tones adding to the initial fruit. Stony/chalky minerality, and a rapier-like finish completed the picture. Heck of a value for $18.

Most of my recent Kabinetts have not shown much dryness but oh still enjoyable.

Vintages are so ripe these days, it’s hard to make Kabinett. There are more trocken wines on the market than used to be, and that’s good, as it offers alternatives to the richer pradikat wines.

Too true, good selection of trocken in cellar right now. Bon weekend.

That would be a good slogan for any Falkenstein wine.
