WTN: Mastroberardino Naturalis Historia Taurasi 2009

by Jay Labrador » Fri Feb 14, 2020 9:25 pm

Managed to put together a decent last-minute V-Day dinner at home. Menu was wedge salad, linguini puttanesca, crown roast of beef, and canonigo. We had a most excellent wine to go with all that. Mastroberardino Naturalis Historia Taurasi 2009. Named after Pliny the Elder's Natural History, this is a 100% Aglianico from the Mirabella Eclano vineyard.

Very dark, opaque violet, with just the slightest hint of brown at the edge. On the nose, ripe plum, blackberry, black pepper, some cocoa powder and a touch of earthiness. Primarily juicy ripe fruit on the palate. Plum, cherry, dried herbs. Real smooth, then a tannic wall at the back end. Could probably use a bit more time to resolve the tannins, but it is very attractive now as the fruit is so alluring. Good length on this. Excellent and quite delicious!

Sounds quite good, J-Lab. First the food--very elegant. And I have never seen a crown roast of beef (pork, yes)--must have been VERY impressive.

I love aglianico, haven't seen this particular bottling from Mastroberadino before though. Sounds very intriguing--and special.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Hi Jenise, first time for me to see beef prepared in a crown as well! My mom had it in her freezer and asked me to roast it so I gave it a go.

Very happy to see Mastroberardino back in Manila. Used to be available here but that was maybe nearly 20 years ago.
