Picked up Betsy at LGA, home for dinner- oysters, flounder, broccoli, sweet potatoes, salad
The 2018 Piuze : Terroir de Chablis” was a fine match with the oysters and the fish, clean and brisk with pear, lemon, and apple flavors, tangy acids, nice minerally finish. Quite the bargain in Chablis AC. B++
Next night artic char, haiga rice with furikake, harukei turnips, turnip greens, stirfried napa cabbage with ginger and oyster sauce, wine was the 2015 Foillard “Cote du Py” Morgon (I need to see opthamologist, could have sworn I grabbed 2013). Ripe and plump, with some slight rubbery notes - seems reductive but doesn’t blow off. Not real intrusive, but not my fave. B-
Super Bowl Sunday I made the chili, Betsy did wings and potatoes, we had salad and guests brought dips. Some non-drinkers, so not so much wine
2018 Schloss Gobelsburg Gruner Veltliner (Kamptal)
Cooking wine.Slight hint of spritz, peach, orange zest, easy. B
1975 Robert Mondavi Napa Cabernet Sauvignon
Wanted to drink this rather than forget in cellar, part of a mixed lot and this bottle had some (declared) signs of old seepage. This was definitely not a pristine bottle (I had a great bottle of this a few years ago), but it showed fairly well nonetheless- redder fruits, some cigarbox, hints of bell pepper and mint. Resolved tannin, moderate acids. The finish is a bit shorter than I remember, and the fruit a little less vibrant. Still quite enjoyable. B+/B
Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice.Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.
