WTN: Roussanne & Champagne

With chicken pad thai , we opened a NV Salmon Brut 100% meunier from Chaumuzy and it was a fine match. Abundant tiny bubbles with some pear fruit and lots of aromatic, fresh out of the oven, biscuit nose and flavors, medium bodied.

With stir fried spaghetti and shiitake I opened a 2012 Qupe Roussanne Bien Nacido Hillside Estate Santa Maria Valley. The wine was a bit muted for the first 1/2 hour (maybe too cold) but really opened up later with lots of spice notes and pear/apple fruit in the background. I was worried that the Roussanne might be over-the-hill but was just fine if slightly in decline.

I am not sure how to tell if a Roussanne is in decline. White Rhône grapes are so strange in their development.
