WTN: Chateau Musar Rouge 2012

by Saina » Thu Jan 16, 2020 4:50 pm

I've been drinking a Ch. Musar Rouge 2012, the most recent release, over the past three days. It was actually pretty open aromatically even on day one without decanting. There is certainly a hot year character to this Musar - like jam instead of fresh fruit like it usually has. But it still has classic Musar notes like a touch of VA (not massive amounts unfortunately as I love it) and all kinds of fun savoury/earthy aspects. So it's not all about the jammy fruit. Quite thick on the palate as well and the fruit quality again suggests a very hot year. A bit of heat on the finish (and bottle says 14,5% which is 0,5 more than I've seen before). But then there's a surprising thing: the acidity is also high. This is a very good thing as it keeps it wonderfully fresh and moreish. Weirdly it doesn't really evolve much over three days open; it doesn't focus into one style but rather shows both the ripeness and the acidity at the same time. I like it, it shows all the good stuff I like about Musar, but I'm not sure it's one of the great ones. That will depend on how it develops with age. If those savoury, VA, acidic aspects keep coming to the fore, I might have to revise my opinion. But if those ripe, jammy, sweet sensations come to the fore, then this won't be a fave.

Anyone here tried the 2012 yet?

Nice. Still sitting on the `99.
The UK forum has thoughts on the 2012 vintage.

Otto!!! You have a new name.

Missed you when I posted on a '97 we opened a week or two ago--an anti-Trump gesture on my part. Haven't had a young Musar in so long that I don't remember what they taste like. Should repair that soon, but perhaps not with the '12. "Jammy" doesn't work for me.

Oh Toe? Who is that? Never heard that name before. The '97 is a fun, naughty Musar! It's a wild year but I love it and I'm sorry I missed your post - I haven't been on wine forums in ages. 2010 might be a good young one for you then. I'll go search for your post on the '97 now.

Okay, Saina it is! Pretty name!

But yes, we loved that 97. Drank it with a lamb curry the day of Soleimani's assassination, so this was very recent. I'm down to just two more bottles of old Musar (another 97 and either a 95 or a 98) and it put me on the hunt for more.

Saina,

Any recent experience with the 2011? I managed to grab two bottles a few months ago.

Nope. But if things go as planned I will have some experience with it tomorrow if you're patient enough to wait a day or two for me to write something about it? :)

'98 was always a bit of a weak year (still pretty good since even weak Musar is great!) so hopefully it's the 95. The 95 was awkward for a very long time but it started opening up beautifully a couple years ago and is now IMO a truly great Musar.

Unless I did the search wrong just now, I haven't posted my 97 over here yet. Will get to that, probably tomorrow. I'm in the weeds in preparation for a tasting tonight.

Ok, 2011 time! It seems a bit closed and muted despite having been decanted in the morning. But it certainly seems a more classic style of Musar than the fruity, sunny 2012. Only a tiny touch of VA in this bottle, pretty S. Rhone-like aromas but with more savouriness. Fairly prominent tannins for Musar and not terribly high in acidity (I usually think of Musar as more acid than tannin driven), pretty clean bottle with purity of fruit. It's a good Musar but not a great one. I kinda want more VA and dirt and wildness to be honest. It just seems a bit tame. But that usually corrects itself with age.

Saina, found it:

1997 Chateau Musar Bekaa Valley Red Blend
Surprisingly assertive acidity (not just for Musar but for a 23 year old Musar--I think) could have been a problem for the crunchy red fruits had I not, coincidentally, made lamb braised with meyer lemon slices and green olives to go with it. The lemon in the dish cancelled deemphasized the acidity in the wine and made it a perfect wine-food pairing.
