American beer....French name ?

by Jim Grow » Sun Jan 12, 2020 9:23 pm

My favorite Imperial Stout of late is made by Seventh Son Brewery out of Columbus Ohio and has the name of "Oubliette". I have been told the name refers of a prison or dungeon. Can any Frenchie out there help with definition and pronouncement?

Yes "oubliette" means dungeon. It comes from the verb "oublier" which means "to forget". Prisoners were put into these dungeons to be forgotten till death. I'm not much good at phonetic spelling but it goes something like this "oob-lee-et". Funny name for a stout! Does it knock you out for good?
